RUGS THAT TELL A STORY

Kilims and carpets are intimately connected to the lives of the nomads and peasants of the Middle East. Not only do they exhibit great beauty while serving utilitarian tasks, but they often served to commemorate important events in the life of a family. Weavings commonly served as a prospective brides dowry, demonstrating her skill as a weaver and providing  a valuable part of the new household. A family member’s journey, particularly a pilgrimage to Mecca, was often celebrated with the production of a kilim or carpet.
